Layering for an Air Conditioned Office

A three-layer plan for cold offices: a light base tee, a polo or shirt, and a zip hoodie at your desk. Real pieces, real prices.

The short answer: dress in thin layers you can add or remove

For an air conditioned office, start with a light tee, add a mid-weight layer such as a polo, shirt or sweatshirt, and keep one warmer piece at your desk. Three thin layers beat one thick one, because you can adjust as the room changes. Choose fabrics that breathe, so the walk in from the heat does not leave you clammy.

An air conditioned office in India runs cold in a way that surprises people. You leave a hot street, walk into a room set for the coldest person in the building, and sit still for eight hours. Sitting still is the key. Your body makes less heat at rest, which is a big part of thermal comfort, so a layer that feels like too much on the road feels right at your desk.

Build an air conditioned office outfit in three layers

Layer one: the base tee

This sits against your skin, so it should be light and soft. The CORE Crew Tee is a 180 GSM cotton tee in a unisex regular fit, ₹749, in Noor Black, Rui White, Agni Red, Neel Blue, Arav Green or Gulabi Pink. If your air conditioned office is very cold, the CORE Long Sleeve Tee is the same 180 GSM cotton with sleeves, for ₹799 in Noor Black, Rui White, Agni Red or Arav Green.

A long sleeve tee is a quiet upgrade. It covers your forearms, which are the part that feels the cold first when you type, and it looks tidy enough to wear alone.

Layer two: the mid layer

This is the layer you keep on most of the day. Good choices are a polo, a soft cotton shirt or a light sweatshirt.

  • A polo: the CORE Piqué Polo is a 220 GSM cotton piqué polo with a structured ribbed collar and cuffs, in a regular fit. It is ₹999, in Noor Black, Rui White, Agni Red or Neel Blue. The collar keeps its shape, so it looks finished without a tie.
  • An open shirt: the EASE Oversized Shirt is a relaxed, drop-shoulder shirt in soft cotton with a clean collar and button front, ₹899, in Rui White, Noor Black or Gulabi Pink. Worn open over a tee, it is a light layer you can button up when the cold gets to you.
  • A sweatshirt: the SIGNATURE Sweatshirt is a 300 GSM cotton fleece crew with ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, in a unisex regular fit. It costs ₹1,149 and comes in Noor Black, Rui White, Neel Blue and Gulabi Pink. It is the warmest of the mid layers, so use it for the coldest rooms.

Layer three: the desk piece

Keep one warm layer on your chair or in your bag, even if you rarely use it. The ORIGINAL Zip Hoodie is a 400 GSM brushed-fleece full-zip in 90% cotton, with ribbed cuffs and hem, in a unisex regular fit. It is ₹1,799 in Noor Black or Rui White. The full zip matters in an air conditioned office, since you can open it as the room warms up without pulling anything over your head.

The SIGNAL Zip Hoodie is a Layers piece for ₹1,799, in Noor Black or Rui White, with EKVAAR spelled in Morse code on the left chest. It is a quieter choice if you want something with a small detail.

Fabric rules for an air conditioned office

  1. Choose breathable fabrics next to the skin. Cotton lets sweat evaporate. A fabric that traps moisture will make you feel colder once you sit still in the air conditioning.
  2. Trap warmth in the middle, not the outside. A fleece or a knit works best as a middle or outer layer. Fine layers hold small pockets of warm air between them.
  3. Prefer structure at the neck. Ribbed collars and cuffs, like those on the polo and the sweatshirt, keep the body warmth in and keep their shape after many washes.
  4. Mind the hem. A ribbed hem stops cold air from creeping up the back when you lean forward at a desk.

Colour pairings that look sharp at work

In an air conditioned office, keep the base tee quiet, and let the middle layer carry the colour. A Rui White tee under a Neel Blue polo is calm and clean. A Noor Black long sleeve under a Rui White shirt, worn open, has a crisp contrast. Gulabi Pink shirt over a Rui White tee works well when you want something softer. Agni Red is best as a single piece, such as a polo, with the rest kept neutral.

The commute problem

The hardest part is the mismatch between the road and the air conditioned office. You want less on outside and more inside. Wear your base tee and carry the mid layer in a bag, then put it on after you have cooled down at the door. This keeps you from arriving damp and then sitting under a vent. A light fleece or a polo folds small, and our care advice on how to fold and store hoodies helps a zip hoodie sit neatly in a bag.

A note on fit when you layer

In an air conditioned office, layers work only if each one has room for the next. A regular-fit tee under a regular-fit polo sits neatly. A very fitted base under a roomy overshirt also works, because the outer piece drapes. What to avoid is two tight pieces stacked, which pulls at the shoulders and makes you feel wrapped up rather than warm.

If you sit between two sizes and plan to layer a lot, the general advice is to look at the size guide on each product page and think about which piece goes on top. Our post on how a hoodie should fit covers length, shoulder and sleeve in more detail.

What not to do in an air conditioned office

  • Do not wear one very heavy piece. You cannot take half of it off.
  • Do not wear damp clothes under a vent. Change or let them dry first.
  • Do not skip the base layer. A shirt or a hoodie directly on skin gets dirty faster and feels harsher.

FAQs

What should I wear to an air conditioned office in India?

Wear a light cotton tee as a base, add a polo, shirt or sweatshirt, and keep a zip hoodie at your desk. Thin layers let you adjust to the room.

Is a hoodie suitable for office wear?

It depends on your workplace. A full-zip hoodie in a plain colour, such as Noor Black, is easier to dress up than a pullover. Check what your office normally allows.

How many layers do I need?

Two or three thin layers cover most air conditioned office settings. A tee, a mid layer and a warmer piece to keep nearby is a simple set.

Which colours are easiest to layer?

Noor Black and Rui White pair with everything. Add Neel Blue or Arav Green as your middle layer for depth without much effort.
