How to Get Sweat Smell Out of Tees

An eight-step washing routine to get sweat smell out of tees, with fixes for stuck-in odour and tips for drying in humid Indian weather.

The short answer

To get sweat smell out of a tee, wash it soon after wearing, turn it inside out, give it room in the drum or bucket, use enough water to rinse fully, and dry it completely in moving air. Most persistent smell comes from damp storage and slow drying, not from a weak detergent.

This is a routine, and the order matters. Skip one step and the sweat smell usually returns. The steps below are written for Indian homes, where a laundry basket in a humid flat is often the real problem.

First, know what causes sweat smell

Fresh sweat is mostly water and salt and does not smell strongly. Sweat smell starts when bacteria on the skin and in the cloth break sweat down, the same process behind body odour. Warm, damp cloth is where they thrive. That is why a tee that goes into a bag or basket while damp smells worse the next day than one that was hung up.

Two things follow from this. Speed helps: the sooner the cloth dries or gets washed, the less time the bacteria have. And thorough rinsing helps: leftover detergent and body residue in the fibres can hold odour in.

The washing routine for sweat smell, step by step

  1. Do not leave it damp in a bag. When you get home from a run or a hot commute, take the tee out and hang it. If you cannot wash it that day, let it dry fully before it goes into the basket.
  2. Turn it inside out. Sweat smell sits on the inside face, where the cloth touched skin. Turning it inside out puts that face toward the water and detergent.
  3. Rinse first if it is very sweaty. A quick cold rinse before the main wash removes the salt and surface sweat, so the detergent has less to fight.
  4. Use the right amount of detergent. More is not better. Too much leaves residue that traps sweat smell. Use what the pack recommends for the load.
  5. Do not overload the machine or bucket. Cloth needs space to move so water can flow through it. A packed drum barely rinses.
  6. Follow the care label for temperature. Cold or lukewarm water is the safe default for cotton tees and protects the colour and shape.
  7. Rinse well. If you wash by hand, rinse until the water runs clear. If you use a machine, an extra rinse is worth the few minutes on smelly loads.
  8. Dry completely, in moving air. This is the step people rush. A tee that feels dry on the outside but is damp at the seams will smell in a day.

If the sweat smell is already stuck in

Sometimes a tee has been washed the same way for months and the sweat smell has become part of it. Two commonly shared fixes are worth trying, one at a time:

  • A baking soda soak. Soak the tee in cool water with a spoonful or two of baking soda for about half an hour, then wash as normal.
  • A white vinegar rinse. Add a small amount to the final rinse water, then rinse again in plain water. Do not mix vinegar and baking soda in the same soak, and do not mix vinegar with other cleaning products.

Neither is a guarantee. If a tee still smells after a proper routine and both fixes, it is worth asking whether the cloth or your washing setup is the issue. A machine that smells musty will make clean clothes smell musty.

Drying in monsoon and humid weather

In Mumbai, Chennai or Kolkata in the rains, clothes can stay damp for a day or more. Some practical habits help:

  • Hang tees with space between them so air reaches both sides.
  • Use a fan pointed at the drying rack, or a spot near a window with airflow.
  • Wash fewer tees at a time so each dries faster.
  • Never fold or store a tee that feels even slightly cool and damp to the touch.

For hot and dry weather, direct sun is quick and helps, but dark colours can fade under strong sun over many washes. Turn them inside out and dry them in shade with good airflow if you want to protect the colour. We covered the same problem for dark cloth in how to wash black clothes so they stay black.

Choosing tees that are easier to keep fresh

Your washing routine matters more than the tee when it comes to sweat smell. But a couple of choices make the routine easier.

The CORE Crew Tee is a 180 GSM cotton crew tee at ₹749 in Noor Black, Rui White and Agni Red. Cotton is breathable, which means sweat can evaporate rather than sit on the skin, and it is easy to wash in a normal cycle. A 180 GSM tee is mid-weight, so it dries at a reasonable pace compared with a very thick cloth.

The CORE Sleeveless Tee is a 180 GSM cotton sleeveless tee at ₹749 in Noor Black and Rui White. It is light and breathable, and it keeps your arms free. It makes sense for the gym, humid days and as a base layer, and it dries quickly because there is less cloth.

A simple rotation also helps. If you own only two tees, both get worn daily and neither ever fully dries between wears. With more, each gets a rest. We wrote about how many you actually need in how many tees for a week.

What not to do

  • Do not add more detergent to fix sweat smell. Extra detergent leaves residue that traps odour.
  • Do not use fabric softener as a fix. It can coat the fibres and hold smell in. If you use it at all, use it sparingly on other clothes.
  • Do not dry a damp tee on a shut cupboard door. No airflow means no drying.
  • Do not skip the pockets and underarm seams. Check that area when the tee comes out of the wash. If it smells before it goes on the line, wash it again.

A weekly habit that works

Try this for two weeks before you change anything else:

  • Hang each tee to air the moment you take it off.
  • Wash sweaty tees the same day or the next morning, never after three.
  • Rinse first, use the right amount of detergent and do not overload.
  • Dry fully, then store.

If the sweat smell still comes back, look at the machine, the drying spot and the basket, in that order. Clean the drum, check that the rack gets air and keep the basket open rather than shut.

A tee that is looked after should stay soft and keep its shape. If you are ready to replace one that has given up, our pieces are made for you in India once you Reserve them, with free shipping across India.

FAQs

Why do tees smell even after washing?

Sweat itself has little smell. Bacteria feeding on it cause the sweat smell, and if they are not fully washed out or the tee is dried slowly, the smell comes back once you sweat again. A better routine usually fixes it.

Does a white vinegar rinse work?

Many people use a small amount of white vinegar in the rinse to help with sweat smell, and it is a commonly shared tip. Use it sparingly, rinse well, and test on a hidden corner if you are unsure. Do not mix it with other cleaning products.

Should I wash tees after every wear?

If you have sweated in it, yes, or at least air it out fully the same day. A tee worn for a short time in a cool room can be aired and worn again.

Is sun drying better than drying indoors?

Sun drying is faster and helps with sweat smell, but strong sun can fade dark colours over time. Drying dark tees inside out, in shade with good airflow, is a safer habit.
