What Is Bio-Washed Cotton and Why Does It Feel Softer?

Bio-washing is a finishing step that removes loose surface fibres from cotton. What it does, what you feel, and how it shows up in the CORE Contrast Raglan.

What bio-washed cotton is

Bio-washed cotton is cotton fabric that has been given a finishing wash, commonly with enzymes, to remove the tiny loose fibres that stick up from the surface. With that fuzz gone, the cloth feels smoother and softer from the first wear, and it tends to go less rough and fuzzy as it ages.

This post explains what the step does, what you can feel, and how it appears in a real piece: the CORE Contrast Raglan, a 180 GSM bio-washed cotton tee with long contrast raglan sleeves.

Why raw cotton feels rough at first

A cotton tee begins as yarn, and yarn is a bundle of short fibres twisted together. Even a well-spun yarn has fibre ends sticking out of the surface, like very fine hairs. In a new, unfinished fabric, those ends make the cloth feel dry and slightly scratchy. Wash it many times and they slowly wear away, which is why a tee often feels best after a year of use.

Finishing steps speed that up, and bio-washed cotton is the result of one of them.

What happens when bio-washed cotton is made

In the most common form, the fabric is washed in water with enzymes such as cellulase, natural proteins that act on cellulose, which is what cotton is made of. The enzymes break down the loose fibre ends on the surface without harming the body of the cloth. The fabric is then rinsed and dried.

The word “bio” refers to the enzymes, which are biological in origin. It does not, by itself, say anything about how the cotton was grown, and it should not be read as an environmental claim. It is a finishing step, and that is all it is.

Different mills carry out the process in different ways, so results vary. We are describing the general idea here, not any one mill’s method.

What you notice when you wear bio-washed cotton

You will not see the bio-wash. You will feel it, in a few small ways:

  • A smoother surface. Run your palm across the cloth and it feels cleaner, less dry.
  • Softness from day one. A bio-washed tee does not need a dozen washes before it feels good.
  • A cleaner look. With less surface fuzz, colours often look clearer and the cloth looks more even.
  • Less pilling. The little balls of fuzz that form on some cotton after wear are formed by exactly those loose fibres. Fewer loose ends mean fewer chances to pill.

With bio-washed cotton, some of this is a tendency rather than a promise. A bio-washed tee that is washed hot and dried harshly will still wear faster than one that is looked after.

The CORE Contrast Raglan as an example

The CORE Contrast Raglan is a 180 GSM bio-washed cotton tee with long contrast raglan sleeves, in a unisex regular fit. It costs ₹849 and comes in Noor Black and Rui White.

A raglan sleeve runs in one piece from the collar to the underarm, rather than being set into the shoulder. That gives a softer, more relaxed shoulder line. Contrast sleeves are cut in a different colour from the body, which is why the tee reads as a statement without any print. The long sleeves make it a good year-round layer in air-conditioned rooms and cool evenings. For outfit ideas, we wrote a post on long sleeve raglan outfits.

Because the tee is bio-washed, the smooth finish is a good match for the clean, graphic look of a colour-blocked sleeve. Fuzz on a two-colour piece is more noticeable, so the finish helps the design as well as the feel.

Bio-washed vs the CORE Crew Tee

The CORE Crew Tee is also a 180 GSM cotton tee, at ₹749, and is described as mid-weight and soft from the first wear. Its page does not mention a bio-wash, so we will not claim one. What the two share is weight. What differs is the cut, the sleeves and the price: the Raglan costs ₹100 more and gives you a colour-blocked long sleeve. Read them as two designs on the same cloth weight, not as a bio-wash test.

Bio-washed versus other finishes

You may see other words on labels: pre-shrunk, combed, brushed, mercerised. They are separate steps. Combing removes short fibres before spinning, so the yarn is smoother from the start. Brushing raises a soft nap, as on fleece. Bio-washing works on the finished fabric surface. A tee can have more than one of these, and a label that lists none tells you little. That is why we prefer to state the cloth weight and the finish on the page, and why it helps to ask what a word actually does before it changes what you pay.

It also helps to remember that finish and weight are different questions. A bio-washed 180 GSM tee is still a mid-weight tee: it is smoother, not thicker or warmer. If you want warmth, look at GSM. If you want a softer first wear, look at the finish.

How to look after bio-washed cotton

The finish is durable, but you can help it last:

  1. Follow the care label for temperature. Cool or lukewarm water is the safer choice for cotton.
  2. Turn the tee inside out before washing to reduce rubbing on the outside face.
  3. Wash with similar colours and avoid rough items such as denim or towels in the same load, which can rub the surface.
  4. Dry in shade with good airflow, rather than for hours in strong sun.

None of this is special to bio-washed cotton. It is the same care that keeps any cotton tee soft. We go into it further in how to spot a well-made tee, which also covers what to look for before you buy.

Is it worth caring about?

If you wear a tee for many hours, feel every seam and hate the stiff first wash, yes. Bio-washed cotton is one of the small things that separate a tee that feels finished from one that feels new and rough. If you are simply buying a tee to wear under a shirt, it will matter less.

FAQs

What does bio-washed mean?

Bio-washing is a finishing step where cotton fabric is treated, commonly with enzymes, to remove loose surface fibres. The result is usually a smoother, softer cloth that is less likely to go fuzzy.

Is bio-washed cotton different from ordinary cotton?

It is still cotton. The difference is in the finish: the surface is cleaner and smoother, so it often feels softer from the first wear.

Does the CORE Contrast Raglan use bio-washed cotton?

Yes. Its page describes it as a 180 GSM bio-washed cotton tee with long contrast raglan sleeves, in a unisex regular fit, at ₹849.

Will a bio-washed tee still soften over time?

All cotton softens with washing. A bio-washed tee starts closer to that soft state, but how it ages still depends on how you wash and dry it.
