How to Pack Hoodies Without the Bulk

Folding and rolling techniques to fit hoodies in cabin bags, and which hoodies pack flatter.

The short answer: roll it, compress it, or wear it

A hoodie is the bulkiest thing in most bags. To pack hoodies without the bulk, roll each one tightly from the hem upward, place it in a shoe or packing cube, and press the air out. If it is still too big, wear it on the journey. Zip hoodies pack flatter than pullovers because the front is one plain panel.

Below are four ways to pack hoodies, when each works best, and how to keep the hood from getting crushed.

Why hoodies take so much space

A hoodie has more fabric than a tee, and it has parts that do not lie flat: a hood, a pouch pocket and thick cuffs. Fleece and brushed cotton also trap air. That air is what makes them warm, and it is also what fills your bag.

The trick when you pack hoodies is to remove the air and stack the bulky parts in a smart order. The four methods below do that.

Method 1: the tight roll

This is the best all-round way to pack hoodies in a duffel or a cabin trolley.

  1. Lay the hoodie face down on a bed or floor.
  2. Fold the hood down towards the hem so it lies flat on the back.
  3. Fold each sleeve inward across the back, so they form a rectangle with the body.
  4. Starting at the hem, roll tightly towards the neck.
  5. Press down on the roll as you go, to push the air out.

Rolling is the most compact way to pack hoodies: a rolled hoodie fits into gaps around shoes and bottles. It also stays in one piece when you pull it out at the airport.

Method 2: the flat fold in a packing cube

A flat fold works if you pack hoodies in cubes or want your hoodie on top of everything.

  1. Zip up a zip hoodie, or smooth a pullover flat.
  2. Fold the sleeves across the back.
  3. Fold the body in thirds, hem to neck.
  4. Tuck the hood inside the last fold so it is not left loose.

A flat fold is fast and tidy. It is not as compact as a roll, but it creases less. Our guide to folding and storing hoodies covers this in more detail.

Method 3: the compression trick

If you have a large zip-lock bag or a compression bag, place the folded hoodie inside, close it most of the way, and press out the air with your hands or by kneeling on it gently. Seal it and you can cut the volume by a good deal. Use this to pack hoodies for long trips, and open it as soon as you arrive so the fabric can recover its loft.

Method 4: wear it

The easiest way to save space is to wear the bulkiest piece. On a plane, a train or a bus, a hoodie is also useful because air-conditioning is often cold. If you feel warm when you board, tie it around your waist or drape it over your bag.

Which hoodie packs better?

Two hoodies from the range show how the cut changes the way you pack hoodies.

The ORIGINAL Zip Hoodie is a 400 GSM brushed-fleece full-zip hoodie in 90% cotton, with ribbed cuffs and hem, in a unisex regular fit. It is ₹1,799 and comes in Noor Black and Rui White. Being a full-zip, you can lay it open and flat, which makes it easy to fold in a clean rectangle.

The ARCHIVE Oversized Hoodie is ₹1,499 and is described as heavy and roomy, with dropped shoulders, a double-layer hood and a kangaroo pocket. It comes in Gulabi Pink, Arav Green, Neel Blue, Noor Black and Rui White. The roomy cut means more fabric to fold. It packs well when rolled, but it will take more space than a regular hoodie, so plan for it.

Protecting the hood

A crushed hood is the main reason a hoodie looks tired after a trip. Whenever you pack hoodies, fold the hood flat against the back before you roll. Never stuff other items inside it, because pressure leaves marks. If your hoodie has a double-layer hood, the extra structure helps it recover, but flat storage still works best.

Cabin bag order: where to pack hoodies

If you are packing a small cabin bag, the order below keeps the weight sensible and the hoodie accessible.

  1. Bottom: shoes and heavy items, near the wheels.
  2. Middle: rolled bottoms and tees.
  3. Top: the hoodie, so you can grab it when the cabin gets cold.
  4. Outer pocket: chargers, documents and a bottle such as the Hydra Bottle, which is 750 ml and has a carry strap.

How to pack hoodies for a longer trip

For a week or more, you may want a second layer. Choose one thicker hoodie and one lighter piece, and wear the thicker one on the journey. Pack the lighter one rolled, and keep it near the top. That way your bag only carries the bulk of one heavy piece, and you still have something clean to change into.

Unpacking at the other end

When you arrive, take the hoodie out first. Shake it out, let it hang for an hour and the fabric will loosen and settle. If you are in a hostel or a guest room, hang it on the back of a chair instead of leaving it in the bag. Fleece and brushed cotton recover their softness quickly when they have a little room to breathe.

Common mistakes when you pack hoodies

  • Folding while damp. Fully dry the hoodie first, or it may pick up a musty smell.
  • Packing it at the bottom. You will need to unpack the bag to reach it.
  • Stuffing socks into the hood. It leaves marks.
  • Bringing two when one will do. A single hoodie in a neutral colour can go with everything.

Choosing a colour that packs well

When you pack hoodies, darker colours hide creases and small marks from travel. Noor Black and Neel Blue are practical for this. Lighter colours like Rui White look fresh, but they show dust, so keep them in a cloth bag or cube.

FAQs

What is the best way to pack hoodies in a cabin bag?

Roll each one tightly from the hem to the neck, with the hood folded flat on the back, and place it in a gap or on top of the bag. If space is very short, wear it.

Do zip hoodies pack smaller than pullovers?

They often fold flatter because you can lay them open. The ORIGINAL Zip Hoodie folds in a clean rectangle for that reason.

Will rolling a hoodie leave creases?

Some, mostly on fleece and brushed cotton. They usually settle after a few minutes of wear. A flat fold on top of the bag creases less than a tight roll.

Can I pack an oversized hoodie in a small bag?

Yes, but it will take more space. Roll it tightly, use a compression bag if you have one, or wear it while travelling.

When you are ready to choose a hoodie for your next trip, reserve it from the shop.
