Wardrobe Basics: Quiet Solids Done Properly

Solids is the EKVAAR house for basics. How we choose colours, describe cloth and give every piece one job, with the CORE Crew Tee, ORIGINAL Hoodie and EASE Joggers.

Wardrobe basics, done properly

Good wardrobe basics are the plain tees, hoodies and lounge bottoms you reach for every day, and Solids is the EKVAAR house built for them: a few permanent colours, made in India and made for you. These are the pieces you wear most and think about least, so the cloth, cut and finish have to be right without any print to hide behind.

That is the hard part of wardrobe basics. A printed tee can carry a weak cloth. A plain one cannot. In Solids, there is nothing to look at except how the piece is made, so we treat every choice as a real one.

One of five houses

EKVAAR is a House of Originals with five houses: Solids, Layers, Street, Luxe and Origins. Each answers a different question. Put simply, Solids holds the wardrobe basics that answer “what do I wear every day?” If you want the full map, the five houses explained post walks through all of them. This post stays with the first.

Principle one: a small set of colours

Our wardrobe basics come in six permanent colours: Noor Black, Rui White, Agni Red, Neel Blue, Arav Green and Gulabi Pink. Not every piece comes in every colour, and each page lists what is currently offered. The point of a fixed set is that pieces from different seasons still go together. A Noor Black tee bought this year works with a Neel Blue hoodie bought next year, because the colours are the same colours.

A small palette is also honest, and it suits wardrobe basics well. It means you can look at the range and see what it is, rather than hunting through forty shades that change every season.

Principle two: say what the cloth is

Wardrobe basics should say what the cloth is, and every Solids page states it plainly. The CORE Crew Tee is a 180 GSM cotton tee. The ORIGINAL Hoodie is a 300 GSM brushed cotton fleece. The EASE Joggers are relaxed cotton joggers with a tapered leg and ribbed waist and cuffs. If you do not know what GSM means, it is grams per square metre, a rough measure of how heavy a cloth is: about 180 for a mid-weight tee, 300 for a fleece hoodie.

We include these numbers for all our wardrobe basics because “premium cotton” tells you nothing. A number lets you compare one piece with another, and with pieces from other brands.

Principle three: each piece has one job

Good wardrobe basics each do one job. Three examples show how this works.

CORE Crew Tee: the daily tee

The CORE Crew Tee is a 180 GSM cotton crew in a unisex regular fit, ₹749, currently in Noor Black, Rui White and Agni Red. It is mid-weight and soft from the first wear. It does not try to be a statement or an athletic top. It is the tee that goes under everything and works alone. There is a full guide to the CORE tee family if you want to see how the crew compares with the other cuts.

ORIGINAL Hoodie: the warm layer

The ORIGINAL Hoodie is a 300 GSM brushed cotton fleece hoodie with a lined hood and front pouch pocket in a unisex regular fit. At ₹1,299 it comes in all six colours. The hood is lined, and the pouch pocket gives your hands somewhere to go.

EASE Joggers: the easy bottom

The EASE Joggers are a relaxed cotton jogger with a tapered leg, ribbed waist and cuffs, made for slow mornings, travel and everything in between. At ₹1,149 they come in Noor Black, Neel Blue, Arav Green and Gulabi Pink. The tapered leg keeps the line clean above a sneaker; the ribbed waist and cuffs keep them in place.

None of these three is trying to do another piece’s job. That is what keeps a set of wardrobe basics small.

Principle four: nothing that makes it date

Solids has no large logos, slogans or trend cuts. That is a design decision, not a lack of ideas. A piece without a fashion cue cannot go out of fashion in a season, which is exactly what wardrobe basics need. The result is a wardrobe that keeps working for years and does not need replacing because it looked right in one year and wrong in the next. It is the same thought behind why we design fewer things, made to last.

How Solids fits with the other houses

Within the five houses, Solids is the base: the wardrobe basics. Layers adds warmth and structure on top, Street brings design, Luxe is a small limited set of finer pieces and Origins covers accessories. Most people start in Solids because wardrobe basics go with everything else. A Noor Black tee sits under a Layers piece, beside a Street tee, or with an Origins cap without any of them competing. If you want to see what goes on top, there is a post on layering clothes.

Who Solids is for

  • People who are tired of shopping and want to solve their basics once.
  • Anyone building a first wardrobe, whether for a new job, a new city or a fresh start.
  • People who already own loud pieces and need quiet ones to go with them.
  • Anyone who wants to know exactly what the cloth is before paying for it.

Wardrobe basics like these are probably not for you if you enjoy showing a graphic or want something new every month. For that, the Street house is built around design.

What Solids is not

It helps to know what Solids is not. It is not a value line or a cheaper version of anything else. It is not a set of blank garments waiting for a design. It is a complete house with its own rules: few colours, honest cloth descriptions, one job per piece. When a Solids piece is finished, it is finished.

How to start

A simple first order of wardrobe basics is one tee, one hoodie and one bottom in one or two colours. For example: a Noor Black CORE Crew Tee at ₹749, an ORIGINAL Hoodie at ₹1,299 and EASE Joggers at ₹1,149. Together that comes to ₹3,197. Every piece has a Size guide link beside the size options with its own measurements, so you can check the fit before you Reserve.

Everything is made for you once you Reserve. That means no stock sitting in a warehouse and no overproduction. Shipping is free across India.

That is Solids: quiet wardrobe basics, done properly, in a small set of colours, in cloth we describe honestly. It is the least glamorous house we have and the one we would keep if we could keep only one.
