A stole is a long, narrow piece of fabric you wear over your shoulders, around your neck or looped through a bag. To style a stole, drape it evenly over both shoulders for a clean line, fold it once and wear it as a scarf, or tie it to a bag handle as an accent. Choose one plain outfit underneath and let the stole be the single detail.

What we mean by a stole

A stole is longer and slimmer than a shawl and lighter than a blanket wrap. It does not try to keep you very warm. It adds a line of colour or texture, covers your shoulders when a room is cold, and can be worn a dozen ways with zero effort.

The Original Stole is a good example. It measures 20 × 70 inches, is made in lightweight poly-woven satin, and is printed with the EKVAAR monogram over a black-to-grey gradient. It is ₹499 and comes in Noor Black. Because it is lightweight satin rather than wool, it drapes and slides easily, and it folds down small enough for a bag.

Size matters here. Twenty inches is a comfortable width, wide enough to look like a proper wrap, narrow enough to fold or twist. Seventy inches gives you room to wrap twice, or to let both ends hang long.

Seven ways to style a stole

1. The straight drape

Place the centre of the stole behind your neck and let both ends fall evenly down the front. Do not tie anything. This is the simplest way to style a stole and it looks best over a plain tee or shirt, because the stole draws a vertical line from shoulder to hip.

2. The one-shoulder throw

Throw one end over your left or right shoulder and let it hang down the back. It looks relaxed and slightly undone, which is the point. Try it over a hoodie so the two textures sit against each other.

3. The folded scarf

Fold the stole in half lengthwise, loop it once around your neck and pull one end through the loop. Satin is slippery, so the knot may loosen. Tuck a small twist into the front if you want it to stay put.

4. The shoulder cover

In a cold cinema, restaurant or office, spread the stole across your shoulders like a light cape. Because it is lightweight satin, treat it as a layer for cool rooms, not for a cold winter night outdoors.

5. The bag accent

Fold it to a narrow strip and tie it around a bag handle with a loose knot. This is the easiest way to style a stole for a little colour on an all-black day, without changing your clothes.

6. The waist tie

Wrap the stole once around your waist over a long top or an open shirt and tie it at the side. It works best over straight, plain pieces so the tie reads as a deliberate line.

7. The hair wrap

Fold the stole into a narrow band, wrap it around a ponytail or bun, and tie it in a knot. Satin is smooth, so use it together with a hair tie rather than in place of one.

Outfits to style a stole with

You style a stole best when the clothes underneath are simple. The moment the outfit has its own big detail, the stole competes with it. Here are four easy pairings using pieces that already exist in our range.

With a white tee and black joggers

A CORE Crew Tee in Rui White (₹749, 180 GSM cotton) and EASE Joggers in Noor Black (₹1,149) make a quiet base. Add the stole in a straight drape and you get a clean high-contrast look for a casual day out.

With an oversized hoodie

To style a stole with a hoodie, throw it on one shoulder over an ORIGINAL Hoodie (₹1,299, 300 GSM brushed cotton fleece). The hoodie is soft and structured, the stole is smooth and light, and the contrast makes a simple outfit look considered.

With a kaftan

The EASE Kaftan is a loose, free-size kaftan in soft woven satin with a V-neck, flutter sleeves and a hidden adjustable belt (₹1,149, Noor Black or Rui White). Because both pieces are satin, they share the same sheen. Let the stole hang long on one side and leave the rest alone.

With a shirt at work

To style a stole for work, fold it into a slim scarf over a plain shirt. If you are unsure how to layer for an air-conditioned office, our guide to layering in an air-conditioned office covers the basics.

A quick table: how to style a stole by mood

Mood How to wear it Pair with
Clean and calm Straight drape Plain tee, joggers
Relaxed One-shoulder throw Hoodie
Cold room Shoulder cover Tee or kaftan
Small accent Bag tie Any all-black outfit
Dressier Folded scarf Shirt or kaftan

The colour question

The Original Stole comes in Noor Black with a gradient that moves toward grey, so it sits comfortably against every one of our six colours. Against Rui White, it looks graphic. Against Neel Blue and Arav Green it reads as a deep, quiet neutral. Against Agni Red and Gulabi Pink it grounds the brighter tone. That makes it easy to style a stole with any of them, and it is one of the reasons we keep our palette small. If you want the thinking behind it, read why we only have six colours.

Caring for a satin stole

Every product comes with its own care label, so follow that first. As general good practice for satin pieces, avoid harsh heat, avoid wringing or twisting the fabric when it is wet, and store it folded flat or loosely rolled so it does not crease deeply. Do not hang it on a rough hook, since smooth fabric can snag.

Common mistakes

  • Over-styling. When you style a stole, keep to one stole, one outfit, one idea. Skip the extra scarf, statement necklace and loud print all at once.
  • Tying it too tight. Satin looks best when it is allowed to fall. A tight knot makes it look bunched.
  • Expecting warmth. This is a light piece. For real cold, wear a hoodie first and the stole over it.
  • Skipping the mirror check for slipping. Smooth fabric moves, so check that it stays where you left it when you walk.

FAQs

What is the difference between a stole and a scarf?

A stole is usually longer and wider than a standard scarf and is often worn over the shoulders as well as around the neck. A scarf is generally narrower and sits mainly at the neck. The Original Stole measures 20 × 70 inches, which lets you do both.

Can I wear a satin stole every day?

Yes. Lightweight satin is comfortable on most days and easy to carry. It is a light layer, so it suits air-conditioned rooms and mild evenings better than very cold weather.

How do I keep a stole from slipping off my shoulders?

Satin is smooth, so when you style a stole made of it, wear it over a textured layer like a cotton tee or hoodie, which grips the fabric better. You can also fold it once so it sits with more weight, or tie a loose knot at the front.

Does the Original Stole suit both men and women?

Yes. It is a simple black-and-grey piece with a monogram print and no gendered cut, so anyone can wear it with whatever they already own.
