Why Heavyweight Tees Hold Their Shape

A denser knit resists sagging, curling and see-through wear. Learn how GSM, cut and care decide whether a tee still looks good in year two.

The short answer: weight, structure and a firm knit

Heavyweight tees hold their shape because more cotton per square metre means a denser fabric, and a dense fabric resists sagging, curling and transparency. A 240 GSM tee has noticeably more body than a 180 GSM one. It hangs straighter, the neckline stays put and the fabric does not cling. Cut and construction still matter as much as weight.

Almost everyone has owned a tee that looked good on day one and tired by month three. The neck opened up, the hem twisted, the fabric went thin. Usually the cause is not bad luck. It is a light fabric asked to do a heavy job. This post explains what heavyweight tees are, how to tell one from a light tee, and what it costs to choose one.

What GSM measures

GSM is grams per square metre. Cut a one-metre square of the fabric and weigh it: that is the number. More grams means more yarn in the same area. It is the simplest way to compare fabrics without touching them.

For tees, here is a rough way to read it. These are general ranges used in the trade, not a rule, and brands draw the lines a little differently:

GSM Feel
Around 150 or below Light, airy, can be see-through in pale colours
Around 180 Mid-weight, soft, everyday
220 to 240 Heavy, structured, opaque
250 and above Very heavy, thick, holds its own shape

In our range, the CORE Crew Tee (₹749) is a 180 GSM cotton tee, mid-weight and soft from the first wear. The FORM Oversized Tee (₹899) is a heavyweight 240 GSM cotton tee. The ESSENCE Terry Tee (₹2,099) is a 260 GSM terry tee in 90% cotton. If GSM is new to you, our hoodie GSM guide covers the same idea for heavier garments.

Five reasons heavyweight tees keep their shape

1. More fibre gives the fabric body

A denser fabric has its own structure. It does not need to be pulled into shape by your body. That is why heavyweight tees drape down from the shoulders in a clean line while a thin one clings to whatever is underneath.

2. The neckline resists stretching

Necklines are where light tees usually fail first and where heavyweight tees pull ahead. A heavier fabric is harder to stretch out of shape, especially when the collar is finished with a firm rib. See our note on rib knit collars and cuffs for how that edge works.

3. The hem hangs instead of curling

Light jersey tends to roll at the hem and twist at the side seams after washing. Weight pulls the fabric straight down, so the hem sits flatter.

4. It stays opaque

Light fabric can show what is under it, especially in Rui White. A thick knit blocks that. It also does not show every line of a layer beneath it.

5. It wears in, not out

A dense knit softens with washing rather than thinning. You get a fabric that feels better in its second year than its first, provided it is cared for.

What the cut adds

Weight is only half of it. The FORM Oversized Tee is cut with dropped shoulders and extended length, which places seams lower on the arm and gives the body room. That cut is meant to look big on purpose, and a heavy fabric supports it. A light fabric cut oversized can fall shapeless. A heavy one keeps a clean, boxy outline. Other heavyweight tees and heavy pieces

  • NAKED Dot Oversized Tee (₹799): an oversized tee in 220 to 240 GSM cotton, finished with a single embroidered dot. Colours: Noor Black and Rui White.
  • ESSENCE Terry Tee (₹2,099): 260 GSM terry in 90% cotton, cut oversized with drop shoulders and a quiet EKVAAR embroidery. It belongs to Luxe, our heavier tier.
  • Contour Hoodie (₹1,999): 90% cotton and 10% polyester at 400 GSM. Not a tee, but a good look at how far weight goes; see the product page.

Trade-offs to be honest about

Heavyweight tees are not better for every day. Consider these before you choose.

  • Warmth. A thick knit holds more heat. In peak summer heat, a 180 GSM tee is often the more comfortable pick. Our post on monsoon fabrics looks at which weights work when the air is damp.
  • Drying time. Heavier fabric takes longer to dry after a wash.
  • Price. More cotton costs more. That is why the FORM Oversized Tee costs ₹899 against ₹749 for the CORE Crew Tee.
  • Feel. Some people prefer the drape of a light tee. That is a fair preference.

How to test heavyweight tees before you trust them

  1. Hold it up to a window. Good weight blocks most of the light.
  2. Stretch the neckline. It should spring back with no rippling.
  3. Fold the hem. It should crease softly, not stay crumpled.
  4. Check the side seams. They should hang straight, not spiral round the body.
  5. Look at the shoulder seam. It should sit flat with no puckering.

Caring for heavyweight tees

Wash it cool and inside out, and avoid harsh detergent. Dry it in shade and fold it rather than hanging it by the shoulders, because weight can pull hanger marks into the fabric. If you keep whites, our guide to keeping white tees white has practical steps.

Who should pick one

Choose heavyweight tees if you want a clean, structured outline, wear tees on their own instead of under something, or are tired of replacing thin tees each year. Choose a mid-weight tee if you live in heat and want something light. Many people own both, one for hot days and one for the rest. Every EKVAAR piece, including our heavyweight tees, is made for you in India once you reserve it, with free shipping across India.

Styling a heavyweight tee

Heavyweight tees have enough structure to be worn as the main piece rather than a base layer. Wear a Noor Black FORM Oversized Tee with straight trousers and clean shoes and you have an outfit that needs nothing else. Wear it with shorts in summer, or with a light overshirt on cooler evenings. Because the fabric holds its outline, you can tuck the front corner into a waistband without it collapsing.

Rui White is worth a mention here. In a light fabric, white can look thin and show what is beneath. In a 240 GSM cotton, it looks solid and clean. If you already own a few white tees, keep an eye on our note about keeping white tees white, and use a cool wash so the fabric keeps its body.

How many should you own?

Two or three heavyweight tees are plenty for most wardrobes. Because they hold up longer, you can rotate them less often than light tees and still see them look good after many washes. Cost per wear tends to drop the longer a garment lasts, and that is the core idea behind buying fewer, better pieces.

FAQs

What GSM counts as a heavyweight tee?

There is no fixed rule, but tees around 220 to 240 GSM and above are usually called heavyweight tees. The EKVAAR FORM Oversized Tee is 240 GSM and the ESSENCE Terry Tee is 260 GSM.

Are heavyweight tees too hot for Indian summers?

They can feel warm in peak heat because a dense knit holds more heat. Many people wear a lighter 180 GSM tee like the CORE Crew Tee on the hottest days and a heavier one the rest of the year.

Do heavyweight tees shrink less?

Fabric weight alone does not decide shrinkage. Cut, knit and care all matter. Washing cool and drying in shade helps any tee keep its size.

Is heavyweight the same as oversized?

No. Weight is about the fabric and oversized is about the cut. The FORM Oversized Tee is both: a 240 GSM cotton tee cut with dropped shoulders and extended length.
